The Find button located on each card is used to conduct searches for data. This function can also be invoked by selecting the Go menu item Find... or by typing Command-F. This brings up a dialog box with seven choices of individual background fields to search or an eighth choice of searching all fields (the latter would be the standard Find command equivalent). There are then three additional buttons allowing a choice of search modes. The first, Find, is the standard HyperCard search which looks for characters at the beginnings of words. Find Word looks for whole words only, and Find Characters looks for any character string anywhere in the designated fields. Once a search is initiated, each time you press the return key you will advance to the next item which fulfills the search conditions.
The dialog box remembers your most recent search text as well as the button settings even between stack use. If you wish to use the return key for other than continuing a search, just be sure to call the Find dialog box and then cancel it. This returns an empty search string even if the search text is still in the dialog box, and it frees up the return key. If the fields do not scroll in a search, just try moving the cursor in or out of the field.
These search capabilities make it difficult to lose a file even in a pile of poorly organized floppy disks.
